“ She wished she’d spent more time teaching her girls that women should forgive themselves, showing them how to take care of themselves with kindness. The world was hard enough, would be them up enough without them adding to the pain.”

Jo and Bethie - inspired by the sisters of Little Women - are growing up in the wake of their father’s untimely death. The story begins in 1951 and spans over 60 years as we follow Jo, the intelligent jock hiding her sexuality, and Bethie, the girly-girl who lives to please her mother through her heavy pursuit of a traditional life.

Two very different women, living two very different lives in the face of war, the civil rights movement , the emerging school of feminism, and the sexual revolution.

If have ever watched their dreams shift, change, or disappear in front of their eyes, this book will speak to you. If you have ever felt out of place or before your time, this book is for you. If you have a sister with whom you feel constantly at war, this book will make you feel at home.

Jennifer Wiener carefully and thoughtful crafts a multi-dimensional, multi-generational, multi-millennial family drama. Tag along as Jo and Bethie fall apart, come back together, only to fall apart again. Sister’s orbiting in space around the pain of their past. Gravity will bring them back together but will it heal them before it’s too late?

I absolutely loved tagging along with Jo and Bethie through the years. I immediately recommended it to my sister because this is a story meant to be a shared with the people who went through the trenches of childhood with you.

If you love family drama, you will love Mrs. Everything.
